Own areas certified

The certification process's implementation has been historically consolidated in Klabin’s forestry units, a reflection of which is the maintenance of excellent performance results in its third-party audits.

The FSC® certification program for wood suppliers has been positively impacting the production chain, driving exponential growth in areas of the certification groups. Along with the company’s own forest areas, the certified suppliers contributed to the entry of more than 70% of the certified raw material during the year 2021, guaranteeing a percentage beyond that required by the certification.

Third-party audits recognize the continuous evolution of the quality of operational processes and compliance with relevant laws and standards.

Chain of Custody and internal audits

In addition to compliance with the principles of FSC® certification for its own areas, these strict international wood control standards are applied throughout the wood supply chain, and audits are conducted by an externally accredited team every six months to evaluate the Chain of Custody standards, which ensure the competence of the traceability system. This due diligence system assesses documentary issues in 100% of wood suppliers. In addition, a robust system of internal audits is responsible for field checks. Technical guidance occurs continuously, strengthening the knowledge of the production chain on aspects of forest sustainability and guiding them in the certification of their properties. In case of identified non-conformity, the wood supply is blocked in the system until the operation is readjusted according to Klabin’s guidance.

SLIMF FSC standard

The company supports producers in achieving Small and Low Intensity Managed Forest (SLIMF) certification, in partnership with FSC Brazil and other relevant civil society organizations. The work began in 2013, when the Certification Program for Forest Producers was implemented by the company. In 2014, after the approval of the standard by FSC® International, the company started a pilot project that certified 41 forest partners from the Forest Producers Group of Médio Tibagi.

Plant with Klabin is a reformulation of the Forestry Incentive Program. Within the initiative, rural producers are invited to participate in the company’s forest expansion process through the cultivation of pine and eucalyptus, and encouraged to integrate the forest with the other activities they carry out on their properties. Plant with Klabin is an excellent option for landowners to generate income, supplement their production portfolio, and bring new jobs and development to the region.

All the partner producers of the Plant with Klabin Program are directed to the Matas Legais [Legal Forests] and Forest Certification Programs.
For 16 years, we have been helping rural producers from Paraná and Santa Catarina to conduct the environmental readjustment of their properties through the Matas Legais [Legal Forests] Program. The initiative promotes the preservation and restoration of riparian forests and legal reserves for small producers, an increase in family income and awareness on environmental issues. More than 60 municipalities are served in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina.

The Klabin Partner Forest Certification program is an initiative that has been supporting the production of sustainable forests since 2014 in Parana and since 2017 in Santa Catarina. Suppliers that agree to receive support for the forest certification of their areas undergo a process (paid for by Klabin) of document and field organization to prepare for the external audit, which is conducted by the certifying body. The process allows small suppliers to add value to the FSC®-certified product, facilitate doing business, and improve the competitiveness of the value chain as a whole.

All operations in forest areas under our management are guided by the certification principles and criteria.
In the company’s current expansion scenario, inclusions are made cautiously after being evaluated in a rigorous flow of documentation, geospatial information, and field inspections. The strategy adopted to include new areas in the certification scope is based on the supply planning analysis that follows the S&OP concept. This process contributes to more collaborative planning, with more effective participation from all areas involved.

Forest certification management

The Company values certifications awarded by independent organizations that guarantee quality, attest to the credibility of our products and reaffirm our commitment to continuous improvement, in addition to ratifying the best social and environmental responsibility practices that we adopt in our processes and products.

Our certifications confirm the pioneering spirit of the company in its search to meet the needs of the customers, anticipating market trends. We were the first company in the Southern Hemisphere to receive an FSC® (FSC-C022516) – Forest Stewardship Council® certification for our forest areas in 1998 and the first in the world to have non-timber forest products certified, ensuring the origin of the raw material used in the manufacturing of our products.

In 2017, the Paraná forestry unit also achieved the CERFLOR certification (Brazilian Forest Certification Program), accredited by Inmetro and internationally recognized by PEFC.

This commitment extends throughout the production chain, since we also encourage and sensitize the partner producers of the Plant with Klabin program to obtain certification through the Small and Medium Producers Certification Program, whose FSC standard was adapted to the local context by the certifying agency and supported by the company.

Timber suppliers are also engaged by our Supply Chain Socio-Business Responsibility Assessment Program in partnership with Ecovadis, in which we have assessed 36 timber suppliers since 2019. In 2021, 100% of the suppliers invited to participate in the Program were evaluated in all four topics: Environment, Labor Practices and Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement. Klabin is committed to supporting suppliers in the search for continuous improvement of their processes.
