The concept of changed lives was introduced in 2019 at Klabin Security and refers to significant effects caused by occupational accidents considered very serious and permanent. Unfortunately, in 2022 we had 6 lives changed. These misfortunes were events related to power shutdown, none of them related to deaths. The percentage increased from 16% to 17.8%. The result of this goal will change over the years, as Klabin’s expansion plan considers new paper operations, which are hydro-intensive. Specific water consumption = (total water captured – total water discarded)/ the company’s total production.

For this indicator, the report also considers the units acquired in 2020. All units have one of the following strategies: new Effluent Treatment Station; Regional Development Forum; and Caiubi Program. In addition, all industrial units are regularly assessed using the WRI Aqueduct tool to identify water stress that guides the Company in prioritizing territories covered by initiatives related to the goal.

Renewable sources accounting for 92% of the energy matrix.

In 2022, with the start-up of the biomass gasification plant at the Puma Unit and the use of bio-oil at the Correia Pinto Unit, replacing fuel oil in the lime kilns, the Company reached 90.9% of its energy matrix from from renewable sources, demonstrating commitment to the 2030 target.

In 2022, 100% of all electricity consumed came from renewable sources, as evidenced by the acquisition of IRECs and by self-declarations. In this way, the company anticipates the achievement of this target set for 2030.

Biodiversity

1 million native tree seedlings for restoring degraded areas in supplier properties.

In 2022, seedlings were planted and donated by the Matas Legais and Matas Sociais Program in Paraná and Santa Catarina, as well as some plantings in Klabin's areas in Paraná. More than 230,000 seedlings of native trees were donated between 2021 and 2022, with around 580,000 seedlings missing to fully reach the goal in 2030.

100% of animal collision points with initiatives for reducing road accidents.

In order to maintain the continuous management monitoring practices of this goal, the following actions were carried out in 2022: Start of systematic monitoring of collisions with wild and domestic fauna in Paraná, Conducting two training modules with drivers of light vehicles, Data analysis and generation of a partial report of critical areas of roadkill, Data analysis and generation of a partial report of the rate of fauna run over per ton of wood and Mapping of the market by technological solutions.

Biodiversity

To reintroduce 2 species which have been shown as extinct and promote the increase in the numbers of four other threatened species.

We released 30 piping guans, with the first batch of 10 individuals in March and the second batch with 20 piping guans, which were released in December 2022. Due to problems in importing composition devices from remote monitoring systems, the birds were released before the arrival of the equipment, which only happened in March 2023.

Maintain or enhance the number of bird species dependent on high quality forests.

We considered the species of dependent birds found in the annual monitoring conducted from 2011-2020, in all three forest units (SP, SC and PR). As parameters for monitoring the goal, we averaged the data on the last five years. If this average remains in over 78% of sighted species it means the maintenance of our current quality levels, and if it remains in over 85%, it represents an improvement. In 2022, the result was 77%.

10 benchmark circular economy cases in partnership with customers.

The cumulative number of cases is equal to 2. A new item in the Bags business is the hydrodispersible bag for cement, developed in collaboration with Votorantim Cimentos. The product is made up of 100% dispersible paper and can be integrated into the concrete preparation process, reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfill.
